The opening of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on April 23, 1920, marks a historic turning point in our nation’s struggle for independence and sovereignty. As the center where our War of Independence was directed and managed, the Grand National Assembly successfully fulfilled this honorable mission and earned the title of the "Veteran Assembly". This great achievement, attained through the perseverance and determination of the Turkish nation under the leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, stands as a rare example in world history.
Founded 106 years ago on the principle that "Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation," our Veteran Assembly established the supremacy of the national will and became the most fundamental and powerful institution of our democracy. By dedicating this meaningful day to children—the guarantee of our future—Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk entrusted them with significant responsibilities in our country’s development and progress. Aware of this responsibility, our university embraces the mission of raising free, inquisitive, and qualified individuals who place scientific thought at their core.
With these thoughts and feelings, I commemorate with mercy and gratitude all our martyrs and veterans, especially the Commander-in-Chief of our War of Independence, the first President of the Grand National Assembly, and the founder of our Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all our children, the hope of our future, on April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.
